About duty2others

On June 17th, 2010, the Mecklenburg County Boy Scouts and Hornet's Nest Girl Scouts are partnering with Million Meal Mission, Samaritan International, Harrison United Methodist Church, and Feed My Starving Children to help prepare 1,000,000 meals for children in the Philippines, Haiti, and more than 60 other countries around the world.

This amazing service event, recently featured in the Charlotte Observer, has a dedicated Scouting Day that will take place Thursday, June 17th at Harrison United Methodist Church in Pineville, NC. You and your group can select a two hour shift at 12, 3, or 6pm.

This event is open to all Daisies, Brownies, Girl Scouts (Juniors, Cadets, Seniors), Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers and all Scouting families from Kindergarten to Great Grand Parents.

You can help by mobilizing your Troop, Pack, Crew, or Families to come and fill a 2 hour slot and preparing meals for those beyond our borders in need.

Help needed at Oasis Shrine Temple

Million Meal Mission is in URGENT need of volunteers. If you volunteered to work at FMSC when it was at Harrison, you know how EASY this is.  Mineral Springs and Harrison combined packed over 720,000 meals.  There are only 280,000 to go to make the 1 million goal!! We are again in desperate need of caring volunteers who want to make a difference by packing food for 2 hours. We need 700 volunteers to work shifts for the 3rd and final event this week at the Oasis Shrine Temple, 604 Doug Mayes Place, in Charlotte. Take 485 east (going toward Matthews) to Hwy 29 toward Charlotte, which is North Tryon.  Off of N. Tryon, take a left on JW Clay Blvd, then right on Doug Mayes. It only takes about 1/2 hour to get to this location.  To participate, register at www.millionmealmission.org or drop by and join in.

Available Shifts this week are:

Wednesday, June 23

12 noon – 2 p.m.

3 p.m. – 5 p.m.

6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Thursday, June 24

12 noon – 2 p.m.

3 p.m. – 5 p.m.

6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Friday, June 25 (This is the final day and Charlotte will break the 1,000,000 meal which will be a RECORD for a MOBILE PACK EVENT

9 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Thank You and Next Steps

Everyone:

Just a quick update on the Million Meal Mission.  First, we would like to express our thanks and appreciation for all who signed up and participated in this event. Even though we had a lower than anticipated turn out by Scouts on Thursday, Harrison UMC was able to exceed their goal of 350,000 meals.  That, in addition to the over 350,000 meals packed last week, puts them well on our way to reaching the million meal goal.

Next week’s packing event at the Oasis Shriner’s Temple in north Charlotte has a lot of openings — so if anyone is available, please sign up at www.millionmealmission.org for one of the shifts between next Tuesday and Friday.  We’d love to see a great turnout of Scouts there to participate in this Duty to Others event.

June 17th Sign Ups Open to Everyone

Goal: 1 million meals

3 area churches unite to create food packages

By Elisabeth Arriero, Charlotte Observer, May 26, 2010

Over the course of 12 days, three area churches will prepare enough food to feed a million children.

Feed My Starving Children, a nonprofit Christian organization, has created a food mixture that is both nutritionally sound and easy to transport and prepare. The group, founded in 1987, travels all over the nation setting up mobile packing units for various organizations and allows children as young as 5 to participate.

And Charlotte will be the site of its biggest feat yet.

The local churches created the Million Meal Mission after seeing the devastation the earthquake in January caused in Haiti.

Mineral Springs and Harrison United Methodist churches as well as Oasis Shrine Center will hold events in hopes that up to 350,000 meals are packed at each event.

The meals will then be delivered to Haiti and other third world countries. Continue reading Goal: 1 million meals
